How to play

GuessTheSong takes about a minute to learn. Here is everything from creating a room to reading the scoreboard.

1. Get into a room

There are two ways to play. Open the server browser to see every public room that is waiting for players, including the theme, the number of people inside and whether a PIN is needed. Or create your own room: choose a name, a theme, the number of rounds and the time per round, and optionally set a password. Share the four-digit room code or the invite link with your friends and they will land directly in your lobby. No account is needed, a nickname is enough.

2. Pick the settings

The room owner controls the game from the lobby:

3. A round, step by step

  1. A five-second countdown lets every device load the clip so the song starts for everyone at once.
  2. The clip plays. Type the song title into the chat box and press enter. Anything that does not look like a guess is treated as a chat message, so you can trash-talk and guess in the same box.
  3. Correct guesses are not shown to other players. Wrong guesses are visible to everyone.
  4. As time runs down, letters of the title are uncovered as hints. Up to half of the characters can be revealed by the end of the round.
  5. The round ends when time is up or when everybody has guessed. The title and artist are revealed with a link to the track, and a scoreboard shows what everyone earned.

4. Scoring

A correct guess is worth a base score plus up to three bonuses:

PartPointsHow to earn it
Base100Any correct guess during the round.
Speed bonus25 to 125125 for guessing within the first ten seconds, dropping in steps the longer you take.
Order bonus200 / 150 / 100For being the first, second or third player to get the song. Everybody after that gets no order bonus.
Hint bonusup to 10025 points for every hint letter that had not yet been revealed when you guessed.

So the best possible round is 525 points: an instant, first-place guess before any hint. Consecutive correct rounds also build a streak that is shown on the scoreboard. Signed-in players have their wins and scores recorded on the leaderboard.
